ME Elecmetal Funvesa: Modernization, Efficiency, and Industrial Sustainability in Peruvian Mining

Before becoming part of ME Elecmetal, the Peruvian foundry Funvesa operated with high energy consumption and outdated heat-treatment processes—limitations that constrained operational efficiency and reduced consistency in the manufacture of critical wear parts.

A Cleaner Production and Resource Efficiency (RECP) diagnosis—led by UNIDO (United Nations Industrial Development Organization), in collaboration with the ZIS Peru program—identified a clear opportunity for modernization in the heat treatment process, a key stage in ensuring the quality, strength, and service life of the components used by large-scale mining in Peru.

At the same time, market expectations were rising, with customers demanding:

  • Greater durability and technological precision in parts
  • Advanced engineering, simulation, and performance analysis.
  • Reduced delivery times through strengthened local production.
  • Traceability aligned with ESG standards

A Strategic Investment with Immediate Impact

Through the ZIS Peru program, Funvesa implemented a flagship modernization project: the replacement of two legacy heat-treatment furnaces with a single, high-efficiency furnace equipped with an integrated heat-recovery system. The nearly USD 300,000 investment—30% co-financed by the program—delivered an immediate technological leap, including:

  • A significant reduction in natural gas consumption enabled by heat-recovery technology
  • Simplified, more ergonomic operations that reduce risk exposure and ease day-to-day operation
  • Increased heat-treatment capacity and improved uniformity, particularly for large components such as mantles and crusher bowls
  • Greater process control and repeatability, essential for consistently meeting ME Elecmetal’s quality and performance standards in Peru

Although the application for financing was submitted prior to the acquisition, the project’s implementation, commissioning, and ultimate success were achieved under ME Elecmetal’s leadership—demonstrating a clear continuity of purpose and strategic vision between both administrations.

Transforming Funvesa into ME Elecmetal Funvesa

The acquisition of Funvesa and its integration into ME Elecmetal South America enabled the company to close long-standing performance gaps. The Callao plant is now recognized as a success story within the ZIS Peru program, implemented by UNIDO and Peru’s Ministry of Production—showcasing how targeted industrial modernization can unlock value for mining and manufacturing alike.

Quantitative Energy and Environmental Impacts

  • 937 tCOâ‚‚e/year reduction, equivalent to removing 198 vehicles from circulation
  • 2,690 GJ/year in thermal energy savings (747 MWh)
  • USD $10 in annual economic savings associated with lower energy consumption.

These results position ME Elecmetal Funvesa among the most efficient operations in its category in Peru and establish the plant as a benchmark within the country’s industrial ecosystem.

Qualitative Production and Operational Impacts

  • Increased capacity for large components, expanding the product portfolio available to mining customers
  • Safer, more mechanized processes that reduce physical strain and operational risk for employees
  • Greater consistency in mechanical properties, directly improving component performance and service life

These advancements integrate seamlessly with the ME FIT® value proposition—ME Elecmetal’s wear engineering portfolio that supports customers through design, simulation, monitoring, and continuous improvement across crushing and grinding operations.

“This project simplifies processes, reduces energy consumption, and lowers operational risks. It’s a clear example of how ME Elecmetal turns operational challenges into long-term value.”

— Matías Ahumada, Operations Manager at ME Elecmetal Funvesa

The modernization of Funvesa reflects ME Elecmetal’s commitment to advancing a circular business model. In South America, 96% of the steel used per ton of product is recycled, and the company is on track to reduce emissions intensity per ton produced by 52% by 2030. The incorporation of a more efficient heat-treatment furnace in Peru is a direct extension of this strategy, strengthening the consistency and effectiveness of the model across the region.

Recognition of ME Elecmetal Funvesa as a success story by the ZIS Peru program underscores the meaningful role heavy industry can play when innovation, energy efficiency, and environmental responsibility are integrated—delivering measurable benefits for the industrial ecosystem and the mining sector alike.
