Sustainability at ME Elecmetal: strategic governance at a global level

In the different countries where ME Elecmetal has production is where most of the environmental and social sustainability inputs are generated. These operations generate the information that is requested by customers to comply with their ESG commitments afforded.

Therefore, one key challenge of the recently installed Global Sustainability Committee is to unite the criteria in a global, regional, and local scope; and to follow up the main projects that are being implemented, contributing to the commitments of the mining sector, mainly related to scope 3 Decarbonization and Carbon Neutrality.

Mining customers, as well as other target markets, request information on sustainability aspects that are relevant to their own performance, such as carbon, energy, water and waste management, and transformation to circularity, as well as people, supply chain and community practices, and although the information is made available every occasion, progress has been made in the scope of the information and its data quality. Therefore, through the Committee and the integrated Governance, we will work on:

  • Selection of indicators for periodic reporting to clients.
  • Follow-up of the Action Plan for 2024 and achievement of annual objectives.
  • Mobilization and increasing of the contribution and generation of value to our entire value chain.

The client will have information regarding the different areas of sustainability, aligned with international methodologies and standards, as well as corporate definitions and own and evidence.

ME Elecmetal has outlined its commitment to sustainability, which includes 4 pillars, commitments, objectives, management approaches, priority actions for the year 2024, and key sustainability KPIs.

Below is the image that summarizes the four pillars and their management approaches:

  1. ME Elecmetal Seal: The values are the hallmark of ME Elecmetal, they guide our decision making and the way we relate to each of our stakeholders.
  2. Our People: Our concern for the well-being of our team is inspired by our own history and hallmark, i.e., respect for the dignity of people and their integral development, in addition to the proactive pursuit of excellence.
  3. Environment: Environmental protection is an urgent global challenge that we address in each of our operations and solutions. We are committed to being an active agent to promote GHG reduction and the development of more circularity in the industry, innovating and designing better alternatives and providing permanent information on our environmental performance to the market.
  4. Value creation connections: We work to make mining sustainable by creating value throughout our chain as one of our purposes and innovation and collaboration are the essential principles to do so together with our main stakeholders: suppliers, partners, customers, and community.

Sustainability will be implemented in a functional manner according to the progress and fulfillment of the prioritized actions and based on objectives. For the 2024-2025 period, the following priorities were established:

  • To Measure Carbon emissions for scopes 1,2 and 3, verifying and setting reduction targets among each plant.
  • To develop Talent-related global program, encouraging and fostering the hiring of women.
  • To incorporate different indicators that may provide conclusive information, with a track record and comparable basis, linked to material environmental, social and governance issues.
  • Construction of a periodic sustainability report to clients, advancing in an integrated disclosure, financial  plus sustainability, as the global company that we are.

To address our commitments and objectives regarding Sustainability through an integrated governance naturally embedded into the existing corporate structure (Corporate Committee, Business Committee and ME Regions), at the center of the business, and providing a complete vision of ME Elecmetal, recognizing the key moments of its history integrating local challenges and closing gaps.

During the year 2024, the Committee will be composed of the following ME Regions:

  1. ME South America
  2. ME North America
  3. ME China
  4. ME Grinding Media
  5. ME EMEA
  6. ME APAC

This Committee affords visibility to and from all regions and integrates both global and local view in the decision-making.

In addition, will follow up on more specific and technical initiatives to be implemented. For this purpose, Task Force Teams were created, associated to the existing Committees at the global level, who will execute, monitor, and report on the progress of the priority initiatives, in addition to connecting sustainability with day-to-day management aspects.

In terms of frequency, quarterly sessions with direct reporting to the Business Committee were established, with the expectation that in the midterm employees, first, and then the entire supply chain, will make sustainability an element of their culture, with habits in their daily lives and contributions from the specialties of each one.

Our commitment to sustainability is an integral part of our identity, and the basis is to have people at the center: workers, customers, suppliers and communities, stakeholders that should be on the radar of our Global Sustainability Committee”,

Eugenio Arteaga, CEO ME Elecmetal Global.

“We have a huge environmental opportunity, regarding the systematic reduction of our carbon footprint since we´ve installed high innovations and efficient energy management, circularity practices and collaboration in our supply chain, which positions us as a strategic ally for the achievement of our clients’ goals”,

Constanza Echeverria, Global Sustainability Director.
