ME Elecmetal Makes Significant Strides in Global Sustainability Reporting

The mining client has identified key sustainability needs across several areas: environmental impact, carbon footprint measurement, water usage, integration of renewable energies, and greater transparency in disclosures and definitions related to ethical conduct. On the governance side, there is a focus on diversity and inclusion, as well as strengthening community relations through social outreach. In response, the mining value chain has actively worked to elevate these standards, adapting to the evolving needs of the industry.

In response to these needs, ME Elecmetal has focused on organizing and disclosing information about our sustainability performance. After conducting thorough assessments to identify areas where we can add the most value, we’ve structured our data around key priorities based on our materiality framework. This approach spans from our production centers—serving as the core of our reporting—to the end customer, demonstrating the positive impact of our growing sustainability efforts. By doing so, we aim to decarbonize the mining industry’s supply chain, both globally and locally, contributing to a more sustainable future.

  • The mining customer has outlined its climate and decarbonization goals for 2030 and 2050, prompting supplier companies to implement initiatives that support these targets. This forms the foundation of ME Elecmetal’s “Partner for Sustainable Mining” strategy.
  • To align with these targets, clients proactively request data to report on actual impacts. This often involves collecting specific data or indicators from suppliers on a quarterly or semi-annual basis. These reports contribute to understanding the broader impact of the client’s operations.
  • ME Elecmetal shares reports highlighting the main indicators of its sustainability strategy. Given our established sustainability framework, we focus on key indicators across our four pillars: The ME Elecmetal Signature, Our People, The Environment, and Value Creation Connections. These indicators help measure and communicate the impact of our efforts, ensuring alignment with industry sustainability goals.

Achieving the key objectives for the sustainable development of mining, including decarbonizing as much as possible its operation and value chain, promoting care for the environment, life on earth and climate stability, through the updating of sustainability indicators, is a process that has been carried out gradually integrating more and more data. Currently, it is in the environmental pillar where the mining industry has the greatest impacts and, therefore, where the largest number of indicators are being reported

On a consolidated basis, in the last report sent to clients, a total of thirteen indicators were reported in the four pillars, which are presented below:

The ME Elecmetal Signature

  1. Ownership and Control
  2. Presence
  3. ME FIT Services

Our People

  1. Diversity and Inclusion
  2. Health and Safety

Environment Performance

  1. Metal Raw Material
  2. Energy Management
  3. Carbon Emissions
  4. Water Management
  5. Waste Management
  6. Certification Management Systems

  Value Creation Connections

  1. Innovation Projects
  2. Customer Experience

Currently, ME Elecmetal is disseminating its sustainability indicators internally and to its customers on a quarterly basis. For this purpose, a report was developed in presentation format, which shows the performance disaggregated by operations in Chile, the United States and China, and additionally, a global indicator, which integrates the previous ones.

The current challenge is to align the indicators and integrate the performance of ME Elecmetal’s footprint and thus establish environmental and social goals for 2030, together with the management of programs and initiatives that allow the company to comply with its voluntary commitments.

“The years 2022 and 2023 were dedicated to defining our strategy in areas intrinsic to our business model. The year 2024 has been focused on organizing and systematizing data, laying the groundwork for what’s to come — effective management.”

— Roberto Lecaros, Global Vice President Technical- Commercial, Marketing & Sustainability – ME Elecmetal.

Achieving the key objectives for the sustainable development of mining, including decarbonizing operations and the value chain, promoting environmental stewardship, and ensuring climate stability, is an ongoing process. This effort involves continually updating sustainability indicators and gradually integrating more data. Currently, the environmental pillar stands out as having the greatest impact within the mining industry, and thus, it is where the majority of indicators are reported.

In the most recent report submitted to clients, a total of 13 indicators were shared across the four pillars, as shown in the image below. These indicators reflect our progress in key areas and guide our efforts toward achieving a more sustainable future for the mining sector.
